History 111- Causes Of The Civil War Essays -
History 111- Causes Of The Civil War Causes of the Civil War Although some historians feel that the Civil War was a result of political blunders and that the issue of slavery did not cause the conflict, they ignore the two main causes. The expansion of slavery, and its entrance into the political scene. The North didn't care about slavery as long as it stayed in the South. South Carolina seceded, because Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was voted into office. The Republican party threatened the South's expansion and so Southerners felt that they had no other choice. The United States was divided into three groups by the time the Civil War began: those who believed in the complete abolition of slavery, those who were against the expansion of slavery, and those who were pro slavery. The Republican party was formed in opposition to southern expansion. Their views were Free Soil, Free Men and Free Labor. The Republicans were anti-South but they were in not abolitionists. They believed that slavery was a flawed system that made the south ineffective and because the North's free labor system was superior it must be guarded from southerners. When the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, the South felt threatened, and because expansion was vital to the survival of slavery they also felt their way of life was being threatened. Because slavery was such an important part of Southern society, the South felt that they could not survive without it. That's why they were not willing to compromise with the north. To own slaves was a sign of wealth and social prestige and poor farmers who could not afford slaves had a goal to work for. In the election of 1860 you can see that Lincoln only secured 4% of the popular vote in the South, only winning in the upper 5 states, where in the north he received 54% of the popular vote. This shoes how united the South was in their dislike for Lincoln. If the South had been more divided they might have been more willing to compromise. The central cause of conflict between North and South was slavery, but it was only in it's expansion that it became a reason for war. The entrance of slavery into politics made it into a public issue, and once the issue became public the conflict had to be solved. From the first years in American history, we have drank. Records of the first Europeans on Americas mainland tell about the colonists great thirste after their original supplies of European-made alcohol ran out. The settlers made their own wine. Eve Alcohol was imported from all over the world. Innovative colonists made alcohol from almost anything. One song from the 1700s went like this: If barley be wanting to make into malt, We must be content and think it no fault, For we can make liquor to sweeten our lips Of pumpkins, and parsnips, and walnut-tree chips. Not everyone approved of drinking. Many Protestant groups, including the Methodists and Lutherans had strong antidrink traditions based upon religious teachings. Prohibition was first tried in America to protect colonial settlers from the attacks of I The earliest reformers called for moderation, not total abstinence, but as their movement gained strength it demanded a complete prohibition of all beer, wine, and liquor. The first temperance legislation was passed in Massachusetts in 1838. Called the Many people in this era were beginning to be categorized as either drys or wets. Drys were against alcohol and wets were for it. Even with the increasing number of Drys in office, the liquor trade was one of the nations biggest industries in the lat Saloons were called the Devils Headquarters on earth by some. Supporting the Dry cause were such enigmatic speakers such as Billy Sunday who said: The saloon is the sum of all villainies. It is worse than war, worse than pestilence, worse than famine. It is the crime of crimes. It is the mother of sins. It is the appalling source of miseries, pauperism and crime. With all of this prohibition propaganda, the Wets were having a hard time maintaining the upper hand. Large gifts of cash came for the Dry cause from rich industrialists such as Henry Ford. The Drys saw the

Credence
Credence Credence Credence By Maeve Maddox I started wondering about the use of the word credence when I noticed the following headline on an entertainment news site: Al Pacino gives credence to James Gunns ââ¬ËGuardians of the Galaxyââ¬â¢ The noun credence (KREE-dns] usually functions as a synonym for credibility or believability. For example, ââ¬Å"The premise of the argument lacks credence.â⬠As much as I enjoyed the Gunn film, I find nothing believable about a tree creature that wins everyoneââ¬â¢s affection by saying the same three words again and again, or a genetically engineered raccoon with anger issues. I decided to find out if credence has another meaning that fits the context of that headline. Credence belongs to a family of English words that derive from the Latin verb credere, ââ¬Å"to believe.â⬠For example: credo: a religious belief, a guide to behavior. credible: believable. credential: official documentation indicating that a person may be trusted. credit: favorable reputation; trustworthiness in financial matters. creditable: that which does a person credit, praiseworthy. credulity: a readiness to believe. credulous: inclined to believe on the basis of little evidence. The noun credence occurs most often in the idiom ââ¬Å"to lend (or give) credence toâ⬠: It really gives credence to the live singing in the movie to see them actually do it live onstage, Meron said. Weà seem to live in a celebrity world. A world where being famous has more credence than being brilliant or a good person. During the McCarthy Era, suspicions were often given credence despite inconclusive or questionable evidence. The study lends credence to what scientists have long suspected: ââ¬Å"If you want to recover birds, you need to recover the food that theyââ¬â¢re eating.â⬠Less used is the phrase ââ¬Å"to pay credence to.â⬠It occurs where the verb ââ¬Å"to respectâ⬠would usually be clearer and more succinct: Alas, I am a liberal. I am honour-bound to pay credence to the rantings and ravings of other people and not simply discard them for being ridiculous. People dontà pay credenceà to cultural health, Simmons said.à Originally, the idea was toà pay credenceà to those in our lives who help us succeed. University administrators have become more mediators than foes, as they negotiate how to balance the principles of free speech, to which they pay credence, with students safety and well-being.à I continue to puzzle over the headline. Here are some adjectives that can serve to convey oneââ¬â¢s feeling that a thing is believable: creditable probable possible feasible reasonable rational sound admirable Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Women as commodities of colonialism & capitalism Essay
Women as commodities of colonialism & capitalism - Essay Example Critical relations between races and genders were first formed to somehow satisfy the demands of Imperialism, which is characterized by unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationships which are believed to be the ways of reaching the goal of globalization at high speed. This pushed for a re-examination of race and gender dynamics to fit imperialismââ¬â¢s aim for profits. Intellectual representatives of Capitalism, an economic system that supports private ownership of the means of production of goods or services, which is again brought about by Colonialism movement believed that White people are the only race that are capable of entrepreneurial skills and to produce profits that resulted to the exploitation of the white working class while Africans or the blacks were deprived of land, properties, and work. They were only considered slaves which started the inception of a society of parasites and crimes. Indeed, it was not only racism that Colonialism created, instead, an empire that consisted of many captive nations (Lee and Rover, n.p.). Neocolonialism made the case of poverty, inequality, and abuses grow worse. Aside from racism that was imposed on the Blacks, women were also considered as commodities that were mere instruments for the production of wealth, tainting on their natural and moral rights. The target would always be unmarried women who did not have children and at the same time widowed women. Some concrete examples of which would be the deployment of mostly young women by bulk to some of the most developed capitalist countries such as Bangladesh, a large supplier of apparel to America to provide cheap labor, specifically, a $13 monthly wage; Minor women ages 15 to 35 were forced to work in sugar or mining in South Korea and Thailand with an unfavorable working environment, and or involve them in sex trade that pushes for tourism which is one of the strongest source of foreign trade that time; and a lot of women were involved in the elec tronic industry where after just three or four years of work would already cause them eyesight damage because of the endless hours of peering through a microscope just to maximize profit in exchange of only $15 - $25 a month wage (Lee and Rover, n.p.). Aside from the deployment of women in foreign countries to provide cheap or no labor at all, women were also exploited in their own motherland. The United Nations data report shows that two thirds of the food production profit of the world came from women labor during neocolonialism and colonialism (Lee and Rover, n.p.). Women were greatly associated as the faming class until farming opened into an export business that translated into easy cash, which caused farming and agriculture reassigned to men as part of their gender identity, while women were immediately driven off their lands. During the rise of Capitalism, gender roles and relationships began to be more unsettling especially to the commoditization of women. Instead of Capital ism becoming a good opportunity for women who mostly have experiences in textile, technology, and agriculture business to own and grow their own businesses that would increase local and foreign trade, it increased oppression of women. As opposed to neocolonialism and colonialism where women only have to endure super-exploitation in labor, Capitalism added a burden to them by challenging women to work around strong religious traditions in their workplace. An example of which are women workforce in Malaysia would have to face moral and ethical issues in relation to

Enterprise and entrepreneurial management Essay
Enterprise and entrepreneurial management - Essay Example The competition in business industry has grown to a very different level (Chambers, 2008). The laundry business started will operate in London area; laundry and dry cleaning are the components of fashion and textile sector according to the national career service. The level of employment in the field has remained in a stable trend even under the current economic swings. Laundry and dry cleaning industry expects growth and increased employment in the coming years. The region where the business will operate is one of the largest regions in laundry and dry cleaning services in the United Kingdom. The business is launched because, in early childhood days, clothes washing took place at home but there were laundry services around the area. Washing and dry machines mostly considered expensive and hard to maintain. Although, the clothes were clean and smelled fresh the time taken and labor used remained high. According to statistics from the national association of laundry industry, laundry providers have decreased over the past two decades. In the early 1980s, the number was twelve thousand five hundred, but has since decreased by a margin of three thousand. The main reason cited by people in the industry is the cost of starting up a laundry service. The cost of launching a launderette ranges from sixty thousand to a hundred thousand pounds. The cost has minimized of competitors in the industry by a great extent. The family will provide financial support for starting the business through borrowing. Black People and Perfect Shape Essay Example for Free
Black People and Perfect Shape Essay In the short stories of ââ¬Å"Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discriminationâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The ââ¬Å"Black Tableâ⬠Is Still Thereâ⬠there are many differences from both stories. Both stories talk about the different sizes, shapes, color, and how people are being racist. The first story ââ¬Å"Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination. â⬠They first talked about how in the 1994 in Texas they did not want an obese lady to be a bus driver because of how big she looked. The company doctor stated that she was not up to the task because he said she was ââ¬Å"waddling down the hallâ⬠(Rhode). All though he did not even perform any agility test on her to even see if she would be able to evacuate the bus in case of any emergency and get the kids off the bus in time. That was similar to the second story whereas in 1995 he was surprised when he walked into the cafeteria and noticed that they had a ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠table. He thought after this long that he would never run into something like that again. He never understood the ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠table ââ¬Å"what did it mean? â⬠(Rhodes) He never took the chance to sit there because he always thought if he would sit there that would be making a statement of ââ¬Å"I was afraid that by sitting at the table Iââ¬â¢d lose all my white friendsâ⬠(Rhodes). They were discriminating against the ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠men because he would not sit at the ââ¬Å"black tableâ⬠as what they would call it. This man just refused to be labeled and would not sit at this table and he would always into the cafeteria with ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠people. Segregated was something that he never understood as a kid and he was very shocked when he went into the junior high after twenty-seven years to still see that there was a black table. In the first story they had a case in 2006 in New, Jersey where a cocktail waitress had gained some weight. They never thought anything about it just that she was getting fat and that was not a good look for their waitresses. In the contract it even stated to keep ââ¬Ëan hourglass figureâ⬠that was ââ¬Å"height and weight appropriateâ⬠(Rhodes). When she went to order a larger shirt they denied her because they said their waitresses do not go up on size unless they have had breast implants. They unfairly discriminated this young lady because she was not ââ¬Å"the perfect shape and sizeâ⬠. Actually what is the perfect shape and size in society? Is anybody really the ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠size or is everybody their own shape. In the second story they were very racist because nobody cared to segregate and change how everybody sat in the cafeteria. Everybody always assumed that he should sit at the ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠table but he refused to sit there. Graham always wondered why they would all segregate themselves like that but he noticed when he went back to the junior high twenty-seven years later he noticed that now it was not just the blacks that were segregated; the athletes, Italian, kids that were into heavy medal and smoked pot also all had their table that they called their own. In the first story they also discriminated in 2001 to Jennifer Portnick when they denied he of being an aerobics instructor because her ââ¬Å"imageâ⬠did not look like she was fit since she weighed 240 pounds. Come to find out Jessica was very fit and toned ââ¬Å"she would work out six days a week, taught back-to-back classes, and had no shortage of willing studentsâ⬠(Rhodes). It is really sad that this has gotten a lot worse since 2001. People do not get the chance at certain because they are overweight or because of their appearance. In this time we should not be having the entire discrimination because of size, shape, or even race. According to the first story we still have a lot of these things going on and with Rhode he was shocked that he still saw the ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠table in the junior high twenty-seven years later. Why would people separate themselves? That is a question that will never have an answer because it is something that is still going on in this day. If discrimination was taught to us to be so wrong why would we want to keep this going? Should this not be a cycle that we want to stop and teach our kids something different about this? Discrimination will probably be something that we deal with forever even though it is not good.
